Scrum in the AI Singularity: The Next 30 Years

Scrum in the AI Singularity: The Next 30 Years Last week, at the Give Thanks for Scrum 2025 conference in Boston, the community gathered to reflect on a massive milestone: “Scrum Renewed.” While it is vital to honor the last 30 years of digital transformation mastery, my focus at the event was entirely on the next 30 years of Scrum in the AI Singularity. We are standing at the edge of an event horizon. The rules of the game are not just changing; they are being rewritten by superintelligence. If the last three decades were about managing work, the next three will be about managing Human-AI Symbiosis. Here is the core message I delivered to the community: We must pivot, or we risk irrelevance. The New Reality for Scrum in the AI Singularity We are accelerating toward the Singularity. This is the moment, predicted by futurist Ray Kurzweil to arrive around 2045, when artificial intelligence surpasses all human intelligence combined. This shift is creating a massive economic paradox I call the Abundance-Scarcity Delta. In this environment, the “price of a line of code” is rapidly trending to zero. If your team is still focused solely on “output”—on just writing code or closing tickets—you are performing work that a machine will soon do faster, cheaper, and better. The Pivot: From Process to Cognitive Orchestration What is the purpose of Scrum in the AI Singularity? It is no longer about managing the process of work. It is about Cognitive Orchestration. The Scrum Team must evolve into the engine that directs, constrains, and validates superintelligence. To navigate this shift, we must apply First Principles: Evolution of Roles for Scrum in the AI Singularity To survive the transition, our accountabilities must mature. The traditional titles remain, but their functions change drastically: The Product Owner: Guardian of Purpose The Product Owner evolves into the Guardian of Purpose. Their primary role is ethically prioritizing what a super-AI should think about, ensuring the output aligns with human values. The Scrum Master: Steward of the Interface The Scrum Master becomes the Steward of the Interface. They manage the friction between human ethics and machine speed, specifically working to prevent “hallucination loops” where the AI validates its own errors. The Developers: Master Experimenters The Developers become Master Experimenters. They are no longer just builders; they are the designers of probes that validate the AI’s rewritten science and code. Building the Bridge This vision is daunting. We cannot jump to an interstellar scale overnight. We need a bridge. Over the next 5 years, JVS Management predicts we will see the integration of AI Co-pilots directly into the team, the rise of Bio-Enhanced Retrospectives to manage indefinite-lifespan teams, and eventually, the management of Off-World Compute logistics. The Presentation: Visualizing the Shift To fully understand the data behind the Abundance-Scarcity Delta and the timeline for the Singularity, I invite you to review the full presentation deck from Give Thanks for Scrum 2025. These slides detail the mathematical trajectory of AI acceleration and the specific “First Principles” frameworks we must adopt immediately. Conclusion For 30 years, Scrum helped us build the world. For the next 30, Scrum must help us guide the future. We are not being replaced. Those who accept this mission are being promoted. We are the ones who must teach the AIs, and the world, how to build with purpose, courage, and respect. The journey continues. Thank you for being its guardians. Key Takeaways for Management

Unlocking Team Dynamics: Discover the Power of Self-Organization in Scrum

Unlocking Team Dynamics: Discover the Power of Self-Organization in Scrum In today’s fast-paced business world, the traditional command-and-control management structures are rapidly giving way to more flexible and dynamic approaches. One such groundbreaking method is the concept of self-organization in Scrum, a core theme explored in the latest chapter of Dr. Jeff Sutherland’s updated book, First Principles in Scrum. This blog dives into the essence of self-organization and how it can revolutionize your product development strategies. For those stuck in old style project management if offers a path to seeing all projects as sets of backlog for building continuously supported and enhanced user experiences. What is Self-Organization? First Principles in Scrum research shows that in the design space of all possible teams and all possible products, self-organization arises spontaneously in a sea of chaos where most things do not work, and even if they do work it is often a constant struggle to overcome the forces of entropy which causes all systems to decay. Self-organization is therefore not something you do but a space that you discover where teams are hyperproductive and products and services are awesome. The fastest way to discover regions of spontaneous self-organizations are patterns, as articulated in “The Scrum Book: The Spirit of the Game.” In the context of Scrum, self-organization refers to the ability of teams to spontaneously organize and adapt without external direction. This concept empowers team members to take initiative, make decisions swiftly, and drive their projects forward efficiently. However, the concept was so widely abused by the Agile community where 58% of teams are late, over budget, with unhappy customers that the word “self-organization” was removed from the Scrum Guide in 2020 and replaced with “self-management.” For this reason, First Principles in Scrum goes back to fundamental findings in physics, particularly from Wolfram’s Physics Project where massive computer simulations of the universe finally give us a deep understand of entropy (the Second Law of Thermodynamics), how self-organizing patterns arise spontaneously in nature, and, in a future chapter, how patterns are like bread crumbs in a forest leading teams to a space of spontaneously arising hyperproductivity. Key Highlights from the Chapter: Teasers from the Chapter: Why This Matters: Embracing self-organization can not only streamline product delivery but also enhance job satisfaction among team members. Dr. Sutherland’s insights provide a compelling case for rethinking how teams are structured and managed in today’s digital age. Maneuver Warfare Meets Agile: The Evolution of Scrum for Modern Excellence

Maneuver Warfare Meets Agile: The Evolution of Scrum for Modern Excellence In the ever-evolving business realm, adaptability and rapid responsiveness are paramount. Scrum, the celebrated Agile framework, stands at the forefront of this transformation. However, the newest wave of innovation comes in the form of merging military precision, especially Maneuver Warfare, with Scrum practices. Let’s dissect this thrilling convergence. Maneuver Warfare: An Ancient Doctrine with Contemporary Relevance Though rooted in ancient warfare, the modern understanding of Maneuver Warfare has been significantly influenced and clarified by one of the least known but most proficient German generals. For readers keen on delving into the depth of this strategy, referencing Hermann Balck’s book, “Order in Chaos: The Memoirs of General of Panzer Troops Hermann Balck”, is imperative. At its core, this military strategy champions agility in action, thought, and decision-making. Key attributes of Maneuver Warfare include: The alignment between these principles and Agile methodologies is hard to overlook. Both celebrate adaptability, immediate responses to changes, and laser-focused objectives. Decoding the OODA Loop The OODA loop is foundational to merging these worlds. John Boyd, while devising the OODA loop, was deeply influenced by Balck’s military strategies. The OODA loop breaks down as: Interestingly, Scrum’s origins can be traced back to Dr. Jeff Sutherland’s fighter pilot training, which is intrinsically based on the principles of the OODA loop, establishing a deep-rooted connection between military tactics and Scrum methodologies. Embedding Maneuver Warfare into Scrum How can this integration reshape Scrum’s landscape? Challenges on the Horizon However, the path isn’t devoid of obstacles: From Ballet to Battlefield: The Universal Resonance of Maneuver Warfare Interestingly, the universality of Maneuver Warfare isn’t limited to Agile practices. From ballet dancers battling gravity to scientists exploring the vast cosmos or decoding the intricacies of biology, its principles offer a universal blueprint. The tenets of adaptability, autonomy, clarity, and flexibility echo across disciplines. Whether it’s Scrum’s response to market shifts, a ballerina’s split-second reaction to a misstep, or scientists working within the constraints of Wolfram’s Physics Project, the threads of maneuver warfare weave them together. Final Reflections The amalgamation of military strategy and Agile methodology exemplifies Scrum’s versatility and resilience. As disciplinary boundaries fade, the incorporation of tactics like Maneuver Warfare could launch Scrum teams towards unparalleled success. Yet, a well-calibrated approach, rooted in comprehension and training, remains imperative. In essence, the nexus of ancient military wisdom and modern Agile principles beckons a future where Scrum doesn’t just adapt but evolves, pioneering new frontiers of organizational excellence. GPM Keynote: Unleashing the Power of Scrum@Scale: A Journey of Transformation and Innovation

GPM Keynote: Unleashing the Power of Scrum@Scale: A Journey of Transformation and Innovation In the rapidly evolving world of technology and business, the ability to adapt, innovate, and deliver at speed is no longer a luxury but a necessity. This is where Scrum@Scale, a framework for Agile project management, comes into play. It’s not just about software development anymore; Scrum@Scale is revolutionizing industries across the board. In a fascinating presentation by Jeff Sutherland and Scrum Inc.®, the transformative power of Scrum@Scale is explored in-depth, offering insights into how it can be harnessed to supercharge productivity, quality, and adaptability in any organization. The presentation kicks off with a compelling argument: Agile transformation requires managers to evolve into leaders. Drawing from a study conducted at the 2011 44th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, it’s clear that the biggest challenges of Scrum@Scale for managers are keeping up with the team and learning to “let go” and stop micro-managing. The role of the manager morphs from dictating tasks to communicating goals and visions, a key insight of Takeuchi and Nonaka in their 1986 Harvard Business Review article, The New New Product Development Game.. The presentation then delves into the world of robotics based on Dr. Sutherland’s experience in provided lab space for iRobot when it was a startup. Drawing parallels between the self-organizing principles of the iRobot Genghis, a six-legged insect-like robot, and Scrum@Scale teams. The idea is simple yet powerful: a team can self-organize to achieve a goal faster if it implements some of the basic principles of Professor Rodney Brooks subsumption architecture. But what does it mean to be an Agile leader? The presentation provides a compelling answer, drawing on the ideas of General Von Clausewitz, Sun Tzu, Miyamoto Musashi, and Colonel John Boyd. It emphasizes the importance of cutting through the “Fog of War”, subduing the enemy without fighting, creating a combination of long and short-range strategies, and using the OODA Loop for rapid iterative response to opposing forces. The presentation also underscores that the speed of innovation is the primary success factor. It provides examples of companies that have successfully implemented Scrum@Scale, including John Deere, and Rocket Mortgage. The message is clear: innovation without speed will fail, and speed without innovation will also fail. Finally, the presentation introduces the concept of a Scrum of Scrums, a well-established pattern first implemented at IDX Systems (now GE Healthcare) in 1996. This event is established to resolve emergent dependencies and issues, and to get things to Done. It also discusses the Executive Action Team (EAT) and MetaScrum, key components of Scrum@Scale that enable leadership to make Agile transformations successful. In conclusion, the presentation emphasizes the transformative power of Scrum@Scale in increasing productivity, quality, and the ability to change direction. It also highlights the evolving role of managers in Scrum@Scale, who need to transition from traditional management roles to becoming leaders. To delve deeper into these insights, you can access the full presentation here. Embrace the power of Scrum@Scale and embark on a journey of transformation and innovation today!
